Description

Port Malia is a town pier in Malia, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, located at coordinates 35°17'47'' N, 25°28'26'' E. This is a partially abandoned port that was never completed, presenting significant challenges and hazards for visiting yachts. Due to its incomplete state and maintenance issues, it is NOT recommended for yacht berthing except in emergency situations. Berthing and Facilities: PARTIALLY ABANDONED PORT that was NEVER COMPLETED - infrastructure is incomplete and deteriorating. ATTENTION AT THE PORT ENTRANCE: it TENDS TO SILT UP - approach with extreme caution and only in good visibility. Entrance depths may be less than charted. Also WATCH OUT FOR GARBAGE AND SHALLOWS when mooring - numerous hazards present. There is also RUBBLE ON THE BOTTOM - anchor fouling risk is high. Max draft: 1.5m - very shallow, limiting access to small, shallow-draft vessels only. Market and restaurants available in Malia village. Malia is famous as a major tourist resort and for the important Minoan palace archaeological site nearby (one of Crete's most significant Bronze Age settlements). However, the port itself is in poor condition and should be avoided by yachts. Better alternatives include Hersonissos Port (5km west), Agios Nikolaos (30km east), or Heraklion Marina (30km west). The beach resort of Malia offers excellent tourist facilities, nightlife, and access to archaeological sites, but access should be by land or anchorage elsewhere rather than using this deteriorated port. IMPORTANT WARNING: This port is NOT suitable for yacht berthing - seek alternative harbors.
