Description

Venetian Fort Kales in Ierapetra, Crete, Greece, was built in the 13th century by the Venetians to protect the town. It was destroyed in 1508 by an earthquake and Ottoman raids, and later repaired when the Turks occupied Ierapetra in 1647. The name Kales comes from the Turkish word "kule" meaning tower. The fortress dominates the entrance to the old harbor, and today visitors can see the castle and cultural events organized by the municipality.
