Description

The Gulf of St. Sophia is the beach of the village Komitata in Erissos. A separate settlement existed before the 1953 Kefalonia earthquake, but it was deserted afterward; some houses of the old village still stand. Agia Sophia is a pebble beach with large white pebbles and crystal clear waters. Olives and other trees reach the sea and offer generous shade. It is not a cosmopolitan beach and is sought for calm and serenity. Near the beach there is a canteen, and one old house has been restored and is inhabited. Next to Agia Sophia is Chorgota (Chorgwta) beach, where scenes of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin were filmed in 2000.
