Description

Port Porto Koufo is a town pier in Porto Koufo, Sithonia, Central Macedonia, Greece, positioned at coordinates 39.969705°N, 23.917894°E. DEEPEST NATURAL HARBOUR in Greece with exceptional historical significance and protection. Mooring: VERY SHELTERED PORT, possibility putting longside on concrete pontoons but NECESSARY to LEAVE PLACE at END of FIRST PONTOON for FISHING BOAT which RETURNS EVERY DAY to unload. At least 5M DEPTH for three places each side of first pontoon but WATCH OUT for CONCRETE IRONS which PROTRUDE a little. Rebar hazard requires careful approach. Historical Significance: Porto Koufo is DEEPEST NATURAL HARBOUR in GREECE! Long history - even MENTIONED by historian THUCYDIDES in his works. One of few remaining villages with VERY LOW rate of permanent residents. Name Meaning: Porto Koufo means "DEAF PORT" - protected SO that SOUND of SEA could NOT BE HEARD. Exceptional protection creates silence. Part of PORTA (fortification) that protected Toroni from PIRATES. Village Character: Ideal destination for those who like NATURE and SOLITUDE. Not many tourist facilities but offers beautiful pedestrian road, traditional taverns with fresh fish and Sithonia specialties, small grocery shops. Beach: 1.5KM beach with FINE SAND and CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER. Sea always CALM but gets DEEP QUICKLY. High rocks behind beach create lake-like ambience. Snorkeling/Diving: Reefs and underwater caves (like Erica) where you can see OLD PIRATE SHIP 35M under surface! Exceptional diving attraction. Can hike Kapros for breathtaking bay view. Services: Market, Restaurant, Water, Anchorage. Tip: Greece's DEEPEST natural harbor mentioned by Thucydides! "Deaf port" - so protected sea sound can't be heard. Very sheltered, 5m depth, but leave first pontoon end for daily fishing boat, watch protruding concrete rebar. Nature/solitude destination with 1.5km crystal clear beach, pirate ship wreck 35m deep, hiking Kapros mountain. Historical pirate fortification site.
