Description

Port Neapolis is a town pier in Neapoli Voion, Peloponnese, Greece, located at coordinates 36.507841°N, 23.059025°E. Also named Vatika. Small town in Laconia regional unit, southern Greece. Built near south end of Malea peninsula, close to Cape Maleas. Population 3,090 (2011 census). Ancient History: Built on SAME SITE as ancient Laconian city BOEAE - built 10th or 9th century BC by Heracleid Boeus. City later became part of city-state of SPARTA. Early Roman era: belonged to Koinon of Free Laconians and FLOURISHED. Later declined, COMPLETELY DESTROYED in 375 AD by earthquake. Middle Ages: name corrupted to VATIKA (still used for local citadel). Modern times: village named Pezoula existed. 1837: Bavarian architect Birbach designed street plan of new town named NEAPOLI ("New Town"). Nearby services: ATM, market, restaurant. Tip: Small Laconia town (3,090) near south Malea peninsula, close to Cape Maleas. PROFOUND history - built on SAME SITE as ancient BOEAE (10th/9th century BC), later part of SPARTA, flourished under Romans, DESTROYED 375 AD earthquake. Medieval name VATIKA still used for citadel. Modern "New Town" NEAPOLI designed 1837 by Bavarian architect. The Spartan connection, ancient Boeae site, earthquake destruction, and medieval Vatika citadel make this historically layered destination.
