Description

Elafonisos Marina serves as the gateway to Elafonisos Island, also known as the Cross-Sea Island, a small Greek island situated between the Peloponnese and Kythira. The island lies peacefully off the coast of Cape Malea and Vatika, occupying a unique position that separates the Aegean Sea in the east from the Ionian Sea in the west. This relatively isolated island attracts visitors seeking tranquility and natural beauty. The main village on the island is located on the northern tip. Elafonisos Town functions as a charming fishing village characterized by traditional architecture and narrow alleys, offering a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The island holds significant historical value, hosting ancient sanctuaries dedicated to Athena, Poseidon and Apollo. The church of Agios Spyridon stands as another impressive landmark, constructed within a rock formation and offering breathtaking sunset views. The surrounding waters provide opportunities for exploration, with trips available to nearby islets including Kasella, Gaidouronisi, Lepto and Agia Sofia. The island's most distinctive feature comprises its exotic beaches with golden sand and clear waters. Simos beach, located on the southern side of the island, stands out as the most notable shoreline. This exotic beach is popular for camping and ranks among the top beaches in Greece, characterized by its tropical atmosphere. Simos actually consists of two separate beaches: Megalos Simos and Mikros Simos. Megalos Simos holds the distinction of being the longest beach in Elafonissos, while Mikros Simos can be reached within a short walking distance. During windy weather conditions, Simos attracts windsurfers who take advantage of the favorable conditions. On the north-west side of the island, Kalogeras beach offers another magnificent shoreline option. This beach maintains a close connection to the ancient city of Elafonissos, evidenced by interesting archaeological discoveries excavated in the area. The beach features a football ground for sports enthusiasts, along with numerous cedar trees and scenic sand dunes that create a picturesque landscape. Kontogoni beach is situated on the north-western tip of Elafonissos Island, in close proximity to the main village of Elafonisos, and is accessible via an eastern coastal road. The area surrounding this beach provides various accommodations including villas and studios for rent, as well as restaurants. On the route to Simos, on the southern side of the island, visitors encounter Lefki beach, considered one of the most breathtaking shorelines on Elafonisos. This beach has experienced increasing popularity each year while maintaining its charm and tranquil atmosphere. Lefki beach benefits from an ideal location with its coast protected from south and south-west winds, making it suitable for swimming, sunbathing and relaxation. The beach features smooth, soft sand and bright, crystalline waters. The marina at Elafonisos provides access to all these coastal attractions and serves as a base for exploring the island's diverse shorelines and historical sites. The fishing village character of Elafonisos Town reflects the island's maritime heritage and traditional way of life. Visitors arriving at the marina can easily access the main village with its traditional architecture and explore the narrow alleys that characterize the settlement. The island's position between two seas creates unique maritime conditions and contributes to the clarity of the surrounding waters. The archaeological heritage visible at various locations around the island, particularly near Kalogeras beach and in the ancient sanctuaries, adds cultural depth to the natural attractions. The combination of historical sites, traditional village atmosphere, and exceptional beaches makes Elafonisos a distinctive destination. The marina serves boaters seeking both the tranquility of a relatively isolated island and access to some of Greece's finest beaches, particularly the renowned Simos beach with its tropical character and the increasingly popular Lefki beach with its protected waters and crystalline clarity.
