Description

Port Kokkinos Pirgos is a town pier in Timpaki, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, located at coordinates 35°4'56'' N, 24°44'11'' E. Kokkinos Pirgos (Greek for 'Red Tower') is situated in mid-south Crete, a seaside resort close to Tymbaki, overlooking the Libyan Sea, Agia Galini, and the small Paximadia islands. The climate in the region is quite warm, making it ideal year-round. Berthing and Facilities: In the west, there is a SMALL HARBOR, FULL OF FISHING BOATS. In summer, this harbor is the POINT OF DEPARTURE for FISHING BOAT TOURS to nearby beaches. Limited space for visiting yachts due to fishing boat presence. The harbor provides basic shelter but is primarily oriented toward fishing operations and tourist excursions rather than yacht berthing. Restaurant facilities available in the village. The Natural Environment: In front of the village, there is a VERY LONG SANDY BEACH with SHALLOW WATERS, equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. This huge beach extends for quite a few kilometers from the western part to Kommos village in the east. The beach HOSTS SEVERAL CARETTA-CARETTA SEA TURTLES hatching their eggs in summer - both turtles and nests are PROTECTED by the Sea Turtle Protection Society, making this beach FAMOUS ALL OVER THE WORLD for turtle conservation. The beach consists of two parts: KATALYKI (eastern part, from port to airport) and MAKRIMALIANA/KAKOSKALO (northwest of port, extending to Agia Galini). The surrounding area features many archaeological sites, picturesque routes and landscapes, and small taverns serving delicious traditional Cretan dishes. Note: Respect turtle nesting areas and conservation regulations.
