Description

Port Amfilochia serves as a commercial and fishing boat harbour for the agricultural community in the surrounding area. The port offers limited facilities for visiting yachts, with mooring options consisting of three pontoons and a short quay section north of the fishing boat harbour. The three-mile-long inlet channels prevailing northwest winds that create uncomfortable conditions, making Amfilochia suitable only for visits during settled weather. Yachts arriving at Port Amfilochia have two main mooring options. Approximately 400 metres north of the commercial quay on the western side of the inlet, a wavebreak pontoon protects a series of three pontoons. These pontoons are flimsy in construction and provide poor shelter from prevailing winds, which causes even local boat owners to avoid them. Some laid moorings exist in this area, installed by individual boat owners rather than through organized marina development, making their reliability questionable. The preferred mooring location is the 100-metre quay immediately south of the pontoons. This quay features adequate bollards for securing vessels and includes several electricity and water stanchions along its length. As of May 2013, the electricity supply was operational while water services were not functioning. This quay offers better protection and more secure mooring conditions compared to the pontoon system. Amfilochia town is located at the southern tip of the Amvrakikos Gulf, approximately 80 kilometres from Messolonghi. The town's houses spread amphitheatrically across the slopes of two hills that descend to the natural harbour and beach. The calm waters of the Ambrakian Gulf display a rare phosphorescence phenomenon that attracts visitors to the area. The city was established in the late 18th to early 19th centuries by Ali Pasha, who named it Karvasaras. In 1907, the town was renamed Amphilochia after the ancient settlement of Amphilochic Argos, a colony of the Argeos. Ruins of this ancient city are located at Kenourgio, 10 kilometres north of the modern town. Historical sites in the area include a fortress at the hilltop where ruins of the ancient city of Limnaia are preserved alongside the Byzantine church of Agios Athanasios. The region offers several beaches for swimming. Agios Georgios beach provides organized facilities, while Boukas beach features the monastery of Agios Nikolaos. An underwater volcano lies 150 metres from the shore at a depth of 104 metres, with its last recorded activity occurring in 1847 and 1865. Katakourfo beach offers camping facilities. Cultural events take place throughout the year in Amfilochia. The municipality organizes the Panakarnania festival at the end of July, a week-long celebration of cultural activities. From October 3rd to 10th, the town hosts its annual trade fair, reflecting the agricultural character of the surrounding region.
