Description

Parga Harbour is a town pier in Parga, Epirus, Greece, located at coordinates 39.281785°N, 20.388548°E. Harbor lies west of Ormos Valtou Bay, protected by breakwater. (NOTE: This appears to be duplicate/alternative coordinates for same Parga harbor as NID 4267) Mooring: Yachts moor with long line on eastern breakwater side at depth up to 6m. SHALLOW right at breakwater. Small harbor (~100m wide) with water up to 2m deep. SHALLOW right behind breakwater - bow-to mooring recommended. Many moor at beach but water gets shallow QUICKLY - ONLY SMALL YACHTS. DIFFICULT to maneuver in small harbor, especially HIGH SEASON. NOT RARE for yachts to sail BACKWARDS when leaving. High town quay and north jetty RESERVED for locals/ferries. Alternative OUT OF SEASON ONLY: anchor small cove of Venetian castle, center 4.0-5.0m, good holding in sand. Summer: jetty constantly busy with tripper boats, anchoring approaches FORBIDDEN. Cove popular swimming beach June-September, yachts NOT WELCOMED. Nearby services: Restaurant. Town and Attractions: Resort town between Igoumenitsa and Preveza, population ~3,000. Famous for numerous seaside restaurants/taverns (fresh fish). Popular beaches: Ai Giannaki, Lichnos, Kryoneri, Piso Kryoneri, Valtos, Sarakiniko. Activities: coastal walks, scenic tours, water sports (fishing, windsurfing, diving, water skiing). History: First inhabited by Greek Thesprotians, ancient city Toryne. Current town established early 13th century. Castle on hilltop overlooking town - built 11th century for protection from pirates and Ottoman Turks. Tip: Alternative coordinate for Parga harbor (see NID 4267 for primary entry). Small challenging harbor (~100m) - shallow 2-6m, bow-to recommended, difficult maneuvering especially high season, often backwards departure. Beach mooring ONLY small yachts. OUT OF SEASON cove option (4-5m, good sand holding) BUT summer tripper boats and swimming beach (June-Sept) make yachts unwelcome. Resort famous for fresh fish restaurants, beaches, watersports. 11th century castle overlooks town. The challenging small harbor requires careful planning.
