Description

Baltiza, the old harbour of Spetses, is situated one-and-a-half kilometers from the New Harbour known as Dapia. This natural harbour played a significant role as a shipbuilding center during the 18th and 19th centuries, with the shipbuilding industry remaining active to this day. The harbour extends inwards from the Spetses coastline and offers distinct character throughout the year. During summer months, Baltiza transforms into a cosmopolitan destination filled with yachts and sailboats from international visitors. The winter season brings a different atmosphere, with colorful fishing boats creating a tranquil scene in the calm waters. The harbour features several historical landmarks worth exploring. A lighthouse stands on the small peninsula, accompanied by an old cannon battery. The chapel of the Virgin of the Armada, painted in traditional Mediterranean yellow and white colors, overlooks the port from its scenic location. This chapel provides spectacular sunset views across the harbour. Historical military heritage is preserved through numerous old cannons mounted along the port. A bronze statue commemorating Kosmas Babatsis, a Spetsiote hero, stands prominently overlooking the harbour waters. The combination of active shipbuilding traditions, historical monuments, and natural beauty makes Baltiza a distinctive location on Spetses island, offering both maritime heritage and scenic coastal views throughout the seasons.
