Buoy

Description

Nea Kameni bay in South Aegean, Greece, forbids anchoring. Beware of 1 or 2 red buoys under 2 m of water, visible during the day but not at night. The bay is very well sheltered and used by small ferries that disembark passengers from large tourist ferries. Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni are the youngest volcanic land in Greece; Palea Kameni is less than 2000 years old and Nea Kameni began forming 425 years ago with lavas less than 50 years old. Nea Kameni has 340 hectares and a highest point of 127 m, with virtually no soil; where tephra is thick enough, grasses, succulents and amaranthus survive, and in spring wild flowers cover the summit. Wildlife includes wild rabbits and many small lizards. A single wild fig tree called Erinia grows on the southern slopes of Mikri Kameni, and the tour-boat harbor is also known as Erinia.
