Description

Koufonissi Island, Lassithi, Crete, Greece, lies in the South Cretan Sea, 3.5 miles south of Cape Goudouras and 10 miles southeast of Makrigialos. The uninhabited island is about six kilometers long, 5.5 kilometers across, and 5.25 km² in area, and is the largest of five islands including Makroulo, Strogilo, Trachila, and Marmara. The island is known for white limestone, pits and caves, sandy beaches, dunes, and low steppic vegetation with rare species. There are ruins from Early Minoan to post-Byzantine times, a small church of Saint Nikolaos, and reefs around the island, so care is needed by private boats. Boats run from Makrigialos, and visitors should bring water and supplies as there is no infrastructure or shade.
