Description

Koronisia Marina is located 25 km from the city of Arta in Epirus, Greece. This picturesque village, often called the Greek Polynesia, sits surrounded by the Amvrakikos bay and offers visitors a unique coastal experience. The settlement impresses from every angle, whether viewed from above through aerial photographs that capture the island of Pera Nissi joined by a strip of land to the rest of the prefecture, or explored on foot through its charming streets. The village of Koronissia, also spelled Korakonissia, features houses built circularly on a small hill overlooking the enclosed waters of the bay. The harbor serves as the heart of local life, with fishing boats regularly supplying fresh fish and seafood to the local taverns. Residents primarily engage in fishing and tourism, creating an authentic gastronomic experience for visitors. The natural beauty of the area has driven its touristic development while maintaining its traditional character. The settlement's picturesque layout and maritime atmosphere make it a distinctive destination in the Amvrakikos Gulf region. Beyond its natural environment, Koronissia holds historical significance with the Byzantine church of Panagia Koronissia, dating back to the 7th century. This church represents a rare type of cruciform semi-dome-shaped temple, making it architecturally noteworthy. The island also has monastic heritage, as Osios Onoufrios once lived in a monastery here. Local religious celebrations include the feast of Osios Onoufrios on June 12, honoring the patron saint of the area, and the celebration of Virgin Mary on September 8. These traditional festivities reflect the deep cultural roots of the community and offer visitors insight into local customs and religious heritage.
