Description

Golden Sands, Turtle beach in Famagusta, Cyprus, has 2.5 kilometres of sandy beach protected as a turtle breeding ground. Bars, restaurants, showers, and toilets are closed by the government. From a large distance from the beach you can spend the day snorkeling. Sea turtles nest at multiple North Cyprus beaches, including Golden Sands on the Karpaz Peninsula and Alagadi, which is closed to the public at night during nesting season from 20:00-08:00. The Ministry of Environment of Northern Cyprus works with the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter to monitor turtles, with volunteers protecting nests and organizing public hatchling releases by booking. Nesting is best observed at end of June and beginning of July, with hatching peak around August to September.
