Anchorage

Description

Agiofaraggo Beach, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, is an anchorage with a sandy seabed and some non-dangerous rocks in the last 50 m from the beach, offering very good holding at about 9 m depth. The beach sits at the exit of the Agiofarago Gorge, reachable by a 25–50 minute hike through the gorge or by boat from Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos, or Kali Limenes. The beach has fine pebbles, clear blue usually calm water, and is surrounded by vertical cliffs, with a rocky arch west of the beach. The gorge route passes large caves with hermits from Odigitria monastery, the chapel of St. Anthony, and a small well with brackish water. Nearby is the saltish lake Vourvoulitis, an open sinkhole connected to the sea, which is extremely dangerous to descend to.
