Vathys is a town pier in Vathys, Kalymnos, South Aegean, Greece, located at coordinates 36°58'26'' N, 27°1'42'' E. This beautiful little harbor sits at the end of a dramatic valley basin surrounded by steep rock faces, creating one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Dodecanese. The access road between the rock faces is very narrow, adding to the remote and unspoiled character of this location. Berthing and Facilities: Water depth at quay 1.5-2m towards middle, falling to 5-6m. ONLY A FEW PLACES available - you have to drop anchor about 10-15m in front of the opposite rock face. VERY NARROW for maneuvering and anchoring - exercise extreme caution when entering. Probably the BEST SPOT is JUST AFTER and CLOSE TO THE PIER upon entry. The bottom is SAND AND WEED and NOT ALWAYS GOOD HOLDING - make sure your anchor has PENETRATED THE WEED and is NOT CAUGHT at the roots, which can give you a false sense of security. Check your anchor thoroughly. The shelter from meltemi is EXCELLENT, making this an ideal refuge during strong northerly winds. However, there can be VERY STRONG GUSTS down the steep hills - wind acceleration effects are significant. The place is VERY ATTRACTIVE with dramatic scenery, crystal-clear waters, and an authentic Greek atmosphere. Limited facilities - this is a quiet, remote location ideal for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility. A few tavernas nearby serve traditional Greek food. VHF channel not specified.
