Ulcinj lies in the far south of Montenegro. Approaching from the southeast, unmarked rock Đeran and the shallow waters of Ceka southwest of it are danger points about one mile offshore. In this part of the Adriatic, safe anchorages include the area between Voluica cape and Đeran cape during south wind, near shore at 0.5 to 1 mile distance in 30–40 m depth with good holding, and a spot 700–800 m south of Ulcinj marina with good holding, the best anchorage in south wind. Ulcinj is the southernmost city on the Montenegrin coast. It has 33 km of coastline, of which 18 km are beaches, with very long sandy beaches and about 25 beaches overall, including Velika Plaza, Mala Plaza, Ada Bojana, Borove sume and Valdanos. Velika Plaza is 13 km long. Ulcinj is known for tourism, with the reconstructed old city full of restaurants, cafés, galleries and hotels. Historical data describe it as one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic, with origins before the 5th century BC and the original name Kolhinijum.
