Porto de Recreio de Machico is a small recreational harbor located in Machico Bay on the east coast of Madeira island. The marina provides shelter and berthing facilities for up to 80 small and medium-sized vessels with a maximum weight limit of twelve tons. The harbor is strategically positioned between two Sites of Community Importance: SIC Pico do Facho and SIC Machico-Queimada. The area also falls within the newest Site of Community Importance in Madeira, SIC Cetáceos, which encompasses all coastal marine waters surrounding the archipelago islands. Berth allocation at Porto de Recreio de Machico requires prior municipal authorization from Machico City Council through completion of a specific application form. Marina users must comply with the established Regulations and Code of Conduct. The marina features comprehensive facilities and services for boaters. Water and electricity supply are available on both pontoons. Environmental waste management is provided through differentiated and selective waste containers, including dedicated disposal units for oil, batteries, and other hazardous materials. The facility includes sanitary facilities and changing rooms for marina users. Adjacent to the harbor, visitors can enjoy a pleasant promenade featuring various entertainment and leisure infrastructure. The waterfront area offers additional amenities including a bar and restaurant for dining, as well as a clothing shop. In 2022, Porto de Recreio de Machico submitted its first application for Blue Flag certification, managed by ABAE – European Blue Flag Association. The marina successfully achieved this prestigious environmental and quality award in its inaugural year. The Blue Flag distinction recognizes marinas that meet stringent criteria for water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. In 2023, Porto de Recreio de Machico maintained its Blue Flag status, receiving the award for the second consecutive year. This achievement demonstrates the marina's continued commitment to environmental excellence and quality standards. The harbor's location in Machico, one of Madeira's historic coastal towns, provides convenient access to the eastern region of the island while offering protection within the sheltered bay.
