Description

Gythion is a historic port town located in Laconia (Lacedaemonia) in the southeastern Peloponnese peninsula, Greece. This coastal settlement served as ancient Sparta's seaport and functioned as an important maritime hub until its destruction in the 4th century AD, possibly caused by an earthquake. Today, the town maintains a population of approximately 7,000 residents. The modern port of Gythion operates as a fishing harbor and has developed into a notable travel destination in Greece. The waterfront features distinctive Turkish houses constructed on the steep forested hillside that rises behind the harbor. Visitors can explore the harbor promenade and discover historic streets running parallel to the seafront at higher elevations. The port area hosts several traditional fishing taverns where fresh-caught seafood is served. Ancient Gythion's archaeological remains are largely submerged beneath the waters of Lakonian Gulf, though an ancient theatre and an overgrown acropolis remain visible on land. Cruise ships visiting Gythion anchor offshore in front of the harbor, with passengers transferred to shore using the vessels' tender boats. The ancient islet of Cranae, known in historical accounts, exists today as the small Marathonisi Island, positioned approximately 15 minutes walking distance from the main harbor area.
