Description

Port Merichas serves as the main maritime gateway to Kythnos island in the Cyclades region, offering comprehensive marina facilities for yachts, sailboats, and inflatables with full supply services including water and fuel. The port's strategic location in the western bay of Hora provides exceptional natural shelter, making it one of the most well-protected harbor areas in the Cyclades. The bay's configuration and orientation contribute to Merichas being recognized as perhaps the best natural shelter in the region, offering excellent wind protection from Meltemi winds. Port infrastructure includes the bus terminal connecting Hora-Loutra and Dryopida-Kanala routes, taxi services, car and motorcycle rental agencies, and ship agencies. From Merichas, tour boats depart regularly to various beaches including the notable Colona beach. The port's development began in the 1970s, replacing the earlier system where ships anchored outside the bay and passengers transferred by small boats. In 2000, modern infrastructure was constructed for large passenger vessels outside the windward pier, parallel to the beach. Today's marina operates with full facilities for passenger vessels, providing power supply and water connections. The settlement of Merichas has grown around the port area, establishing it as a transportation and service hub for the island. Private shower facilities are available for visitors at 3 EUR per person. The marina accommodates various vessel types and serves as the departure point for island exploration and beach tours, making it an essential facility for both residents and tourists visiting Kythnos.
