Description

Naxos Marina serves as the main port of Naxos island, located on the west coast directly opposite Paros. The harbor entrance is easily identifiable by the conspicuous breakwater and regular ferry traffic. The town offers good provisioning facilities and dining options for visiting sailors. The marina operates on VHF Channel 69 and provides concrete piers equipped with water and electricity connections. However, berth availability is limited due to high occupancy by local boats, making early arrival essential. The marina typically reaches full capacity by 18:00, so advance reservation is strongly recommended. While the entrance to the busy marina appears tight, adequate water depth exists close to shore. Most tailed moorings are now missing, making the use of your own anchor essential, though holding can be patchy in places. Stern-to mooring is the safest approach, as coming alongside exposes vessels to severe swell from ferry wash. Sailors should pull well off the quay when mooring. A critical navigation hazard exists approximately 30 meters (100 feet) from the southern pontoon, where a chain lies on the bottom. Careful anchor placement is necessary to avoid fouling on this obstruction. Alternative anchorage is available in the harbor just south of the rock featuring the conspicuous ancient Portal monument, positioned under the breakwater. When anchoring in this area, maintain clearance from the cable running parallel to the mole, which is marked on navigational charts. The recommended anchoring depth is three to five meters close to the beach, as anchoring further out increases exposure to uncomfortable ferry wash. This anchorage offers good holding and excellent protection from weather. A third anchoring option exists on the northeast side of the isthmus connecting Nisis Vakkhos to Naxos. This location requires taking a long line ashore and provides good holding. While this anchorage remains open to the Meltemi winds, it offers shelter from southerly weather systems. Marina administration includes a Harbour Master present during summer months. Outside the peak season, mooring fees should be paid at the Port Police office. The combination of limited berth availability, missing moorings, and underwater obstructions requires careful planning and early arrival for vessels intending to use Naxos Marina facilities.
