Description

Kolokytha Beach, Kalydon, Crete, Greece, is a secluded cove with white sand and calm clear waters, surrounded by old olive groves and wheat crops, though it can be crowded, especially in August or when excursion boats arrive. Nearby to the north is a beach by the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Kolokytha (5th–6th century), with scattered marble pieces and mosaic floors destroyed by the sea. The remains suggest the basilica was violently destroyed, likely after a raid. Local tradition links it to St. Catherine or St. Helena.
