Description

Grotta Grande del Ciolo, Gagliano del Capo, Lecce, Italy, is a large natural cave with a small lake showing emerald reflections. It lies about a hundred metres from the bay of the same name, a pebble cove between the sides of the ravine. The cave has an impressive sea-level entrance over 30 metres high and large rooms formed after a collapse, leading to a long inner tunnel and the lake fed by a water source. Local divers can be seen diving from the bridge above into the water. The cave has paleontological value with late and middle Pleistocene sediments. Nearby on the left edge of the narrow Ciolo fjord is Grotta Piccola del Ciolo, about 120 metres deep and connected to the sea.
