Description

Despotiko East, South Aegean, Despotiko, Greece, lies southwest of Antiparos and has sandy beaches. Excavations show it was a cult center from the 7th century B.C. to Roman times, with remains of Apollo temple cemeteries and finds such as swords, golden jewelry, statues, and ceramics. It was conquered by Venetians in 1207 and Ottomans in the 16th century, and became uninhabited after pirates killed inhabitants in the 17th century. Today it is uninhabited, reached by tour boat from Antiparos or Paros, and is popular for its beaches and calm ambiance.
