Description

Chania Marina is located on the north side of Chania city in Crete, Greece, serving as both a historic harbour and modern marina facility. The entrance is easily identifiable by the distinctive Venetian lighthouse and bastion at the mouth of the harbour. The domed mosque and traditional houses along the quay provide clear visual landmarks when approaching from the sea. As a designated Port of Entry, Chania Marina offers full customs and immigration services, with Harbour Police offices located directly on the quay. The visitors' wharf is positioned first to starboard upon entry, while the wharfs further east are reserved exclusively for local boats and rental companies. The entrance to the inner harbour and marina is located immediately to the left after passing through the main harbour entrance. Mariners should exercise caution when entering the harbour during strong winds and heavy seas, as the breakwater at the entrance becomes barely visible above the waves in rough conditions. The innermost section of the harbour is typically occupied by local vessels. The marina provides stern-to and bow-to mooring options, offering excellent protection from all weather conditions. This reliable shelter, combined with comprehensive facilities, makes Chania suitable for both summer cruising and winter berthing. The harbour features a man-made breakwater positioned west of the entrance for additional protection. Navigation aids include the lighthouse on the east side of the harbour entrance, which operates at night, and a flashing lit buoy on the western breakwater. The inner harbour entrance is marked with lights on both sides, with red lighting on the north side and green on the south side. The new marina section is equipped with electricity and water connections available directly on the docks. Fuel delivery service is available, with fuel brought directly to the quay for convenience. The city of Chania provides extensive marine services including repair shops and chandleries for boat maintenance and provisioning needs. Medical facilities are comprehensive, with a General Hospital in Chania supplemented by private clinics, doctors, dentists, and pharmacies. Communication services are readily accessible through the Telephone and Post Offices. The harbour area and surrounding city feature numerous tavernas offering local cuisine and hotels providing accommodation options for visiting sailors and crew members.
