Description

Caska beach anchorage in Pag Bay near Novalja, Lika-Senj County, Croatia, lies on the western part of the bay. The anchorage is on sand with depths around 2 to 6 meters and has northerly wind. Caska is linked to the historical area of Cissa, a Roman town said to have sunk after an earthquake in the 4th century. Studies indicate it was a large and important city, with a luxurious villa of the Roman senatorial family Calpurnia. Evidence is still insufficient to confirm whether Caska was a Roman town or developed earlier. Today the bay has only a few houses, but the seabed hides a sunken city. Divers can find building remains, though much is covered by silt, sand, and seaweed. Landmarks include the old tuna tower and remains of the Romanesque St. Georges Church on the hill above Caska.
