Description

Avlakia port is a town pier in Othonoi, Ionian Islands, Greece, positioned at coordinates 39.839326°N, 19.411118°E. Othonoi is the WESTERN-MOST of Ionian islands, located just northwest of famous Corfu island. Under Corfu prefecture, island was once capital of Diapontia Islands Municipality (including Marlera, Mathrachi, Fano). Mythology and Attractions: Island most famous for cave near Aspros Ammos beach - believed to be where Calypso kept Ulysses captive in Greek mythology. Cave measures approximately 100 meters long and at least 20 meters high. Best visited by hiring boat from Aspros Ammos beach. Nearby services: Restaurant, anchorage. Tip: Western-most Ionian island - remote position northwest of Corfu. Historic capital of Diapontia Islands. MYTHOLOGICAL significance - Calypso's cave where Ulysses was held captive (Homer's Odyssey). Massive cave (100m x 20m) accessible by boat from Aspros Ammos beach. Island small, not highly populated, retains traditional charm - NOT overtouristed. The mythology, cave exploration, and unspoiled character make this unique cultural/natural destination for cruisers interested in Greek legends and authentic island life.
