Stands on far end of natural bay surrounded by mountains and verdant forests.\n\nHistory: Beautiful Venetian buildings destroyed by major 1953 earthquake along with entire Argostoli and other villages. Rebuilt with Greek government help BUT no efforts to maintain traditional architecture/local color. Drapano Bridge (650m stone bridge) at capital entrance with small pyramid dedicated by builder Charles de Bosset to British Empire.\n\nTown Features: Modern, cosmopolitan, quite BUSY summer season. Palm-lined coastal promenade with colorful sea pebbles. Ferry quay (Lixouri boats every 30 min, fishing boats). Plateia Valianou (Vallianos Square) - large, pleasant, many restaurants/cafes/bars, crowded evenings with warm, friendly locals. Lithostroto Street (pedestrian cobbled main street) - all shop types, Saint Spyridon church, Campana Square clock tower, restaurants all budgets. Lush Botanical Garden above square. Nearby services: ATM, car rental, market, restaurant.\n\nMuseums and Attractions: Archaeological Museum - Mycenaean/Hellenistic/Roman findings (coins, swords, sculptures, ceramics).
