Take the steering wheel firmly in your hands and sail as a true captain! A yacht vacation without hiring a skipper is possible - just complete the captain's course. We'll tell you everything you need to know.

⚓ Why Do You Need a Captain's License?

Want a vacation on water with family or friends without crowds? You have two options:

  • Hire a professional captain (expensive, less privacy)
  • Get your own captain's license (investment in the future!)

With an international maritime vessel master license, you can command a boat almost anywhere in the world.

🛤️ Two Paths to Captain's License

1. Croatian Captain's License - Quick Route

What you need:

  • Pass an oral exam at Croatian harbor master office
  • Simpler version, suitable for basics
  • Limited international validity

2. International License - Comprehensive Approach

What you get:

  • Available anywhere in Europe, including Slovakia
  • Complete education in theory and practice
  • Full international validity
  • Respect from fellow sailors

💡 Our recommendation: If you're serious about sailing, invest in the international license. It pays off!

📚 Captain's Course - What Awaits You?

The course consists of three parts:

1. Theoretical Part (4-5 days)

Intensive training includes:

  • Navigation basics - chart reading, position fixing, route planning
  • Seamanship - boat characteristics, stability, maneuvers
  • Maritime law and regulations - what you must know about laws at sea
  • COLREG - collision prevention at sea, right-of-way rules
  • Meteorology - weather forecasting, pressure systems, local phenomena
  • English language - nautical terminology, communication
  • First aid - medical care on board

2. Practical Part (200 nautical miles)

Sailing on a recreational vessel with motor and sails under supervision of experienced captain:

  • ⛵ Boat handling and maneuvering
  • 🎯 Entering and leaving marina
  • ⚓ Anchoring - proper spot selection, technique
  • 🔗 Mooring to buoys
  • 🧭 Navigation by lighthouses and charts
  • 🌤️ Practical meteorology - reading weather
  • 📻 Using VHF radio

After completion, you receive confirmation of sailed miles.

3. State Exam (within 2 weeks after course)

Verification of knowledge from all subjects. Without successfully passing all parts, you won't get your license!

📡 VHF License - Mandatory Component

Besides the captain's license, you also need a VHF radio operator's license.

Where to get it:

  • In Slovakia: Slovak Telecommunication Office in Bratislava
  • Part of the maritime recreational vessel master exam
  • Essential for communication with harbors and in emergencies

🎓 License Categories - Which to Choose?

Category C - Basic

  • Boat length: Up to 24 meters
  • Distance from coast: Up to 12 NM (22 km)
  • Suitable for: Coastal cruising, beginners

Category B - Advanced

  • Boat length: Up to 24 meters
  • Distance from coast: Up to 200 NM (370 km)
  • Suitable for: Most Mediterranean cruises

Category A - Unlimited

🌊 Our Personal Course Experience

In 2008, we completed the captain's course at Skipper Academy in Prešov. We were the first graduates of this training center!

Practical Part - Week at Sea

What we experienced on the water:

  • 🚤 Getting to know the boat - from ropes, through sails, to functional whole
  • Basic maneuvers - leaving marina, approaching buoy, anchoring
  • 🌅 Navigation in practice - sailing only by lighthouses and charts (no GPS!)
  • 🌦️ Live meteorology - how weather changes look in reality
  • 👨‍✈️ Leading crew - captain's role in practice

Unforgettable experience: Navigating a boat at night only by lighthouses and stars - a feeling that captivates you!

Theoretical Part - Intensive Training

Presentation of acquired knowledge from all subjects. We recommend succeeding in each one - it guarantees success at the state exam.
