The port of Alexandroupolis stands as one of Greece's most important maritime facilities and serves as the only large port in Thrace, functioning as the region's greatest commercial hub. The port's strategic importance is enhanced by its direct connection to the regional railway network, enabling efficient cargo transfer between ships and train wagons at two dedicated docks. The port entrance spans 155 meters in width with a minimum depth of 6.5 meters, allowing it to receive vessels up to 200 meters in length. Protection from weather and waves is provided by two breakwaters: the southwestern breakwater positioned upwind and the eastern breakwater positioned downwind.
